The “City of Valencia” Band Contest was first held at the end of the nineteenth century and has endured to take its first steps into the twenty-first. Over a hundred years old, the Contest has witnessed three centuries of music and some of the most important and influential events in the history of Valencia since 1886, when the city mayor, Manuel Sapiña Rico, with the support of the enthusiastic Councilor for Local Festivals, José Soriano Plassent, decided to create a “Music Contest” for Valencian bands. Its well-intentioned creators and first participants could have little imagined that it would go on to become one of the most important competitions of its kind in the world taking part every July.
Special Venues: Carlos V Palace at La Alhambra
The origin of the Palace of Charles V is due to the need for a place that met all the comforts of the time for the emperor and his family, since the Alcazar, which was his summer residence, did not meet their needs.
The emperor ordered the construction of the palace next to the Alhambra in order to enjoy its wonders. The architect in charge of the work was Pedro Machuca, a lover of the Renaissance.
Great Spanish Musicians: Paco de Lucía
Paco de Lucía is considered one of the best guitarists of all time and one of the greatest promoters of flamenco music. With his personal and unmistakable style, De Lucía, who never tired of learning, composed melodies that have gone around the world and has worked alongside internationally renowned figures such as Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Chick Corea.
